Couple loses all; Dolphins' Harrington helps out

OKLAHOMA CITY - (AP) -- Two Oklahomans who moved to Oregon lost all their possessions when their moving van was stolen, but people in their new home, and Miami Dolphins quarterback Joey Harrington, are helping the couple recover from their losses.

Nicole Bennett, 29, and Eddy Fagan, 39, lived in Altus, in southwest Oklahoma, until last month, when they and their three children moved to Oregon. Last week, their moving van -- which contained all their possessions -- was stolen on their fourth day in Oregon. Oregon authorities later found the empty van abandoned.

''Everything we owned was in that van,'' Bennett said Monday from Clackamas, Ore. "At first, we were devastated. Then, the more we thought about it, the madder we got. But our faith in people has been totally restored. It's just been unbelievable how people have responded. This has been the worst and best thing to ever happen to us.''

Since their story went public, the family has received numerous offers of help. Harrington visited the family Sunday and coordinated efforts by businesses to give them household appliances and furniture.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office set up donation drops for the family, and within two hours, a truck larger than the stolen moving van had been filled with donated items. Cash and checks continue to arrive for the family at the sheriff's office.

''The response has been overwhelming,'' sheriff's spokesman Lee Eddy said. "In fact, the family has received more than it will ever need. They're talking about donating items to local shelters.''

Harrington brought the family a laptop computer, a printer, a fax machine, a $3,000 gift certificate from Nike and the donations of appliances and furniture. ''My 12-year-old son Joshua isn't an emotional kid,'' Fagan said. "But when Joey Harrington showed up, he had tears in his eyes. It's just been amazing.''

During Harrington's visit, Fagan proposed to Bennett, and she said yes.
