Lions Help Tackle Hunger One Turkey at a Time
Tuesday, November 15, 2005
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions' players Joey Harrington, R.W. McQuarters and Cory Redding made a special visit to the Capuchin Soup Services Center in Detroit . The Capuchin Services Center assists 200 families daily from across the metropolitan area with emergency needs, including food, clothing, furniture and appliances.

Players helped unload a truck full of Honeysuckle White Thanksgiving turkeys. The turkeys, donated to the Capuchins by Honeysuckle White Turkey, will be included in Thanksgiving food baskets to be distributed a few days before the holiday to Detroit's poor and working poor families.

After unloading hundreds of pounds of turkey, the players took time to sign autographs, pose for pictures and meet some of the families that benefit from the Capuchin Services Center and the volunteers that work tirelessly to meet guests' needs.

Founded in 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has served Metro Detroit by providing spiritual encouragement and material assistance to those in need. Serving over 2,000 meals a day, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen also provides household items, a food pantry, shower program, and clothing. The Capuchin Soup Kitchen also includes a children's tutoring program and Earth Works, an urban organic garden that feeds Detroit's hungry. The soup kitchen is a ministry of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph. The province is headquartered in Detroit and serves Capuchin ministries worldwide.
