Q) Best wishes for your career and foundation. I wonder if there is any significance to your playing number, #3. We all have our theories on this matter. Thanks and God bless.
--Buck Marsh - Yakima, WA
A) There actually is a significance to wearing jersey #3. When I was growing up, my family and I were all big Notre Dame fans and all the great Notre Dame quarterbacks wore number three. Well, not all of them, but it seemed like that when I was ten years old.
Q) Hi Joey,
This summer my son (age 11) was diagnosed with a fast heartbeat. The doctors are recommending an "Abalation" procedure on his heart to correct the problem. Is this a similar procedure to that which you had done last year?
Have a great season, go Lions.
--ENTERED FROM ASKME - ,
A) I had a catheter ablation to correct Supra Ventricular Tachycardia which is one of several abnormal heart rhythms. I understand that ablation is the recommended course of treatment for some rhythms, but not for others.
Q) Joey, I'm a huge fan of yours, and am so happy to see your successes! Bravo! My question is this: is it hard for you to go out into public? Or do you take all the attention in stride? Thanks, and GO LIONS!
--Beth Ford - Portland, AK
A) Honestly, yes, it is tough for me to go out in public. I'm very appreciative of all the attention and fan support and, most of the time, people are very respectful when approaching me to pass on congratulations or ask for an autograph. However, there are times when I wish I didn't have to worry about those things. I do my best to accommodate everyone and their requests but what people don't realize is that they aren't the first person to ask that day. And while it may only take a few minutes for their request, there was someone before them who wanted the same amount of time. It has been very tough for me to balance keeping fans happy and spending quality time in public with my friends and family. It's especially tough because I don't see myself like footbal fans do. To me, I'm still a 24 year old kid who just happens to have a better paying job than other kids my age. I guess just bear with me as I try to become comfortable with the new position I find myself in.
Q) Hi Joey, I was just recently told that I have the same heart condition you had. I'm considering having the catheter ablation done. Just wanted to know your thoughts about it. Should I be worried???
P.S. I have the same doctor you had
--Dawn Ostrowski - Madison Heights, MI
A) My ablation was easy, painless, and quick. Although I understand some ablations can be more complicated, I would tell you there’s nothing to worry about. Dr. Shugar at Henry Ford Hospital is one of the best.
Q) Joey did you ever play anything besides football when you were a kid? I'm 10 & was just wondering how you decided to play football?
--Tony Svensson - Eugene, OR
A) Growing up I played everything...football, basketball, soccer, baseball, track and golf. I think it's very important for kids to get involved in as many activities as posssible instead of focusing on one sport at a young age. I decided to play football when I realized I enjoyed it the most. You need to enjoy the sport you're playing or you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
Q) Hi Joey! I was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and I have been a Lions fan my whole life. I am excited to see what you can do in the upcoming years. I am currently a student at Virginia Tech and I am now looking at attending Law School. I am VERY interested in The University of Oregon. Can you please tell me why you picked to play at U of O and have you seen the alleged basketball court that is inside the almost brand new law school?
Thanks
Gary Walenga
--Gary Walenga - Leesburg, VA
A) I chose to play football at the U of O because it was close to home and my grandpa could come watch me play. I received a tremendous education there. The university is top notch in Business, Law, and Journalism. I have not seen the basketball court inside the law school but I have heard about it. I've seen the new building and it's beautiful.
Q) Joey,
Born and raised in Oregon, recently moved away from Detroit right before you were drafted, imagine my dismay! Having not visited Ford Field before I moved, what is it like playing in a professional stadium versus playing at the intimate venue of Autzen??
--Duane Smith - Mt. Pleasant, SC
A) Playing in Ford Field is a lot different than playing at Autzen. There's a lot more hoopla at the professional stadiums where at Autzen it's just football. During the Duck games the stadium was so loud you couldn't have a conversation with the person next to you on the field. At Ford Field there are a lot more distractions and so the volume isn't so constant. But when the Lions fans get into it the place gets pretty loud!
Q) Joey,
It is uplifting to see an athlete with integrity and character such as yourself. You truly have developed into a positive role model for children across the country. As a social worker for a foster care agency, I have re-learned the importance of providing children with the support and guidance needed to thrive. Thank you for being a leader and using your blessings to bless others. The City of Detroit is proud to have you.
Marie
Detroit, Michigan
--Marie Pronko - Oak Park, MI
A) Thanks so much!
Q) Joey - thanks for taking the time to meet my son, Stephen, at the Crystal the other night! We almost lost Stephen in March to a serious brain illness..We put his favorite pics of you in his hospital room, and for the 8 days he was in a coma, I prayed that he would meet you someday - and he did! Thanks again.
Here's my question:
Does your faith play a significant role in your day-to-day life in the NFL and how has it helped you maintain your composure under so much pressure?
--Lena Poet - Camas, OR
A) My faith plays a very big role in my life. Beside my bed is a celtic cross, a picture of my great uncle who was a priest, Father Emmet, and a picture of my Grandpa Bernie...two people who had a very strong faith in God and family. Both of which were taught to me.
Q) I am an Oregon State Beaver fan and really appreciated your hard work and attitude even though your were a "Duck" !
My question, do you think Ken Simonton will make it in the NFL now that he was named MVP of the NFL Europe team and his great ability to rise to each level.
Thanks Joey, you now have a new "Lion" fan in myself and my kids ! (& Beaver fans !)
--Jim Knotz - Beaverton, OR
A) I do think Ken will make it. In fact, I was very surprised he didn't get a good look this year. He's a tremendous talent but I'm most impressed by what kind of person he is. Ken is a great guy and will have a big impact in many people's lives.
