Q) Hey Joey. I'm a QB at Thurston High School in Springfield, OR. and my coaches want me to work on my foot work. I watched a tape with you and your drills with Tedford, but it's hard to just sit in the pocket when I have D-lineman coming at me. I was wondering if you could give me advise on how to get back faster and be able to hang in a little longer? Thanks -Damon Gathright, Springfield, OR

--Damon Gathright - Springfield, OR
A) Developing quick feet is just as important as having a strong arm - maybe more important. There is no substitute for repetition. You need to keep doing the foot work drills until you don't even think about what you are doing. It will help you get set just that much faster and, as a result, get rid of the ball just that much quicker. The difference between a successful throw and an interception or sack can sometimes be measured in tenths of a second. It just takes lots of work. Good luck.
Q) Hey Joey-You've said before that you did not plan on being a NFL player when you were younger. What did you want to be? We're all confident that you and the Lions will have a spectacular season. Although you may not have had many wins in the past, I don't think that any one can question your heart and desire to be successful. I really appreciate your character and work ethic and I'm confident that it will soon translate into a more productive season. Thanks so much! Erica Reynolds,Ohio

A) I don't think that it was I didn't plan on playing in the NFL as it was being so interested in college football when I was young. I really was a fan of college football - Notre Dame and Oregon , in particular. To play college football was a dream when I was a young kid. I followed NFL teams as well but when I was young I just enjoyed all sports and tried to participate in all that I could. Thanks for the support.
Q) Hey Joey. Just wanted to let you know, as I'm sure you do, how proud those of are that knew you when you were just a kid. I went to Douglas when your dad was principal and coached you at a few Scots camps for basketball. It's been a pleasure watching you grow into who you are today. Keep up the good work and please tell your dad I said hello. Hope to cross paths w/ you on the course sometime..... Noel Adams, Welches, OR

--Noel Adams - Welches, OR
A) Thanks for the note, Noel. I remember the Scots basketball camps very well. It was a big deal to come to the high school with my buddies when we were in grade school and play in that huge gym. I also remember how nice the high school age coaches were to all of us. It made a big impression on me. In fact, I remember that Pete Pierson, who later played tackle for Tampa Bay, was one of my coaches as well. Those were good days.
Q) Joey, I'm a longtime Lion fan, originally from Traverse City, Michigan who then relocated to Eugene in time to see your last season at U of O. Now Im in Corvallis at vet school. My question is an easy one: Do you have any pets or have plans to get any?

--Dave Rataj - Albany, OR
A) Sorry but I don't have any pets here in Detroit and realistically I probably won't get any in the near future. I'm just gone too much to be able to take care of any pets as they deserve.
Q) Joey, Any word on when the annual charity concert will be held this year or who the guest performers will be?

--JohnBoy Frederick - Eugene, AK
A) The summer music concert will be Thursday, June 23, outside at the Rose Garden. There will be a posting on this website very soon with more details. Hope you are able to come.
Q) Hey Joey, I am a big fan of you and the Lions. Just wondering if you ever get a chance to go to any Tiger's, Piston's or Red Wing games.

--Luke Lorenz - Grand Blanc, MI
A) Yes, I've been to Tiger and Piston games this spring already. I enjoy being a spectator at other sports events. Tough to watch the Red Wings this year although I've been to games in the past.!
Q) Hey! Joey, I am a big fan of you and the Detroit Lions. I really hope you guys do well this year. But more importantly, I would like to know why you started this foundation. What were your reasons for starting a foundation to help children? Can you tell of any interesting struggles starting the foundation? How many people are involved in helping with the foundation? On what date was the foundation founded? The reason I ask all of these questions is because I have a project to do and my teacher said I could look up any subject and this was the most interesting to me. Again, I am a huge fan of you. I love your attitude toward the game of football. You know it is just a game and that means alot to people. I hope that you become a leader and have a great future in football! Thank you so much!

A) My parents always encouraged my brothers and me to look for ways to give back to others. It was also part of my experience in school. When I was drafted, setting up a foundation just seemed like the natural thing to do. We began the foundation in 2003 and the board consists of my parents and me with advice from other professionals. The first thing we did was to establish a mission statement to identify a focus for the foundation. It wasn't difficult to settle on youth issues since there is so much need in the areas of safety, education and health. Probably the biggest challenge at first was to develop a process for reviewing the many requests we receive. It takes time to research which requests are valid and most worthwhile. The challenge now is to continue to increase the amount of money we can give away each year to good causes. That's why we started the sale of autographed items on our the website and why I have begun to sponsor events like my concert in Portland in June. All this money goes to the foundation. Thanks for your support of the Lions.
Q) Hello! Just wondering if you will be participating in the Neil Lomax Golfshoot out this year?

--Bunrath Roe - Portland, OR
A) I will if I can but it just depends if the date conflicts with my commitments in Detroit.
Q) Joey, My family and I are long time Duck (and now Lion) fans.We have season tickets and watching you play in college was exciting. We stopped by this little place on Hawthorn St.(great place to eat)Saw lots of pictures of you on the wall and the owner I know is a great friend of yours... You have good people wathcing over you here in Portland and we are PROUD of you...Good Luck this up coming season!!!

--Jessie Walker - Portland, OR
A) You were at Nick's Coney Island on Hawthorne one of the true sports bars in Portland. I have been going there since I was about 3-4 years old. My dad would take my brothers and me there for a cheeseburger and coney on Saturdays. Frank Nudo, the owner, has been a special friend and fan for many years through my high school and college years. Now he is one of the greatest Lions fans in Oregon. If you are a sports fan, there aren't too many places like Nick's! Thanks.
Q) Hello Joey, I live in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and have been a loyal Lion follower for 20+ years. I have no doubts that you are the best QB to be a Lion in that whole time! My question is not really football related but I was wondering if you ever get around other parts of Michigan. The U.P is a wonderful place that may remind you some of Oregon. If you like fishing come on up for a break sometime. If you need a guide look me up in the soo. Chris Johnson, Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

--chris johnson - sault ste. marie, AK
A) When I am in Detroit I am always working out at the facility so it's tough to get too far away. Of course, during the season it's impossible to go anywhere. However, I have been meaning to try to get up in the U.P. My parents were out to a game last fall and had a chance to spend a few days up there and they said it was beautiful. I have just started to fly fish the last few years but haven't had an opportunity to fish in Michigan yet. Maybe this summer.
