Q) Joey,
I have been a Falcons fan for years, and I just wanted to tell you that my wife and I are very proud of what you are doing for this team. It is great to have a real rolemodel for our kids in the Atlanta community.
I am a teacher and coach in the metro area, and it is good to see a positive person as the leader of the Falcons.
My High School team is making strides this year, and it has been a long time since we have had a winning season. What kind of words could you offer our team when it comes to dealing with adversity, and winning? Any help would be greatly appreciated from a professional such as yourself.
Thanks,
Matt Rountree

A) Thanks for the support, Matt. I appreciate what you do for kids and I am sure you are a great role model as a teacher and coach for many of the kids in your school. I was lucky to have some great coaches in high school and college who I respected and still stay in contact with after graduation. My father was a teacher, coach and later a high school principal so I know the importance of a positive role model for young kids. I have said on this site through the years that the most important thing about youth athletics is that kids have fun. There are only a very few who will play beyond high school and the odds of playing professionally is almost zero. They need to enjoy the present experience. If kids can look back and say they enjoyed their time on the court or field with their teammates and they respected their coaches, you have already won. Even though I played on successful teams in high school and college, when I go home to Oregon and catch up with all my former teammates, more than anything we always find ourselves talking about what a great time we had together. Good luck the rest of the season.
Q) Joey - first, welcome to Atlanta! I've always pulled for you since you've entered the NFL. I feel like there are few guys with the down to earth and team-centered attitude that you have.
Your play the last two games has been incredible. I have two questions: 1. Do you feel that the first two games was 'the learning curve' more or less in this new offense? 2. What do you credit your improved performance to over the last couple of games?
Good luck the reason of the season, Joey!! We're pulling for you every step of the way!
--Trey White - Ooltewah, TN
A) I certainly think there was a learning curve in the first couple of games. Unfortunately, in the NFL rosters don't always stay consistent from year to year which makes it more difficult. For me, getting to know a whole new group of receivers takes some time. I am really enjoying playing with them. Our linemen have had to adjust some to my style of play and that can take some time too. They are a great group of guys and we will get better together. Thanks.
Q) JOEY!
Absolutely sweet game on Sunday, heck all of your games have been pretty good. I have the Sunday ticket so I can watch em all. I just wanted to write and say good luck and I hope you guys do well against the Titans. You have momentum on your side. Good luck

A) The last two games have been a real improvement for us as a team and I think we are going to get better as the season progresses I appreciate your support and keep watching.
Q) Hi Joey. I'm a lifelong Falcons fan and just want to welcome you to the team and say that you are doing an excellent job leading this team. It's great to come here and read about the charitable work and what a wonderful person you are. It's nice to know there are some good guys left.
--Roger Newcomb - Airmont, NY
A) Thanks Roger for the note. I really am enjoying myself in Atlanta and being a part of this organization.
Q) Joey,
I am a season ticket holders and have been for years. I just want to say that you are doing one heck of a job with the Falcons. You have brought the word TEAM back to the Falcons. I actually want to go to the games and stay for the whole time. Good Luck next week against the Titans!!!

A) Thanks for your support. I think you are right that our team is starting to come together. Hope you stay till the end for the rest of our games!
Q) Joey!
Great game by you, and great win for Atlanta! You guys definitely should enjoy it. That was a sweet game to watch and congratulations on the two TD tosses. Other than those throws, my favorite throw of the game was when you eluded the pass rush and scrambled to your left to throw that sweet pass to Roddy, who caught it in stride before going out of bounds. Good play and best of luck the rest of the way.
--Justin Pfauth - New York, NY
A) It sure was good to get that first win. I think we are playing better and hopefully we can keep this momentum. Roddy made a great catch on the ball. I was able to scramble a bit to my left on that play so I could get a better angle on the throw. I threw it about the only place I could and he did the rest. Thanks.
Q) Hi Joey! Nice win against the Texans today. Glad to see the Falcons get that first W and start a winning streak. Looks like the team is starting to come together and play some good ball. Keep it up! I know you will get it done in the ATL!! On a more sour note, I was at the Oregon/Cal game for that exciting and heartbreaking defeat. Sure wish we would have had Joey Heisman leading the comeback!!
Good luck! Go Ducks and Falcons!!

A) I think we are finally playing well on both offense and defense together. It makes a difference as you know. I am feeling really good about my play right now and I am very comfortable with the guys I am playing with in Atlanta. Don't worry about the Ducks. It's a long season. We let one get away against Stanford my senior season and in the end it all worked out OK. Hope to be able to see the Ducks play during my bye week. Go Falcons and Ducks!
Q) Hello Joey. No question, Just wanted to say great game on Sunday. It's good to see that everybody played a very good game and most importantly, you guys got the win. It's going to be very hard to stop you guys since the offense is starting to get on the same page. Best of luck for the rest of the season.
--Brian Maksimovic - Larchmont, MI
A) Thanks a lot. I think we are going to continue to play well. It's taken us a little time to get untracked but we are in a flow right now.
Q) Hi Joey, Congratulations on your first victory as a Falcon. You have looked great in the last two games. You really seem to be getting comfortable with Petrino's offense and it appears that the o-line and the receivers are really stepping up. I am really encouraged to see how well you are doing here in Atlanta and wish you continued success. Thanks for making Sundays fun again. -Greg
--Greg Woods - Smyrna, GA
A) Thanks Greg. I think the offensive line is adjusting to my style of play and it's making a difference in our passing attack. I am getting the ball out on time and I really feel great about the receivers on this team. We have had 6-8 receivers catch balls at various times in the game and that puts a lot of pressure on a defense. The last couple of games have been fun.
Q) Hey J-man!
Good job against Carolina! I was wondering about the o-line protections. Under this offensive scheme, you call out the protection at the line of scrimmage, right? So do you ever sit with the linemen during the week and ask them what they like to do, what they think they do well, etc? I mean, if they have a certain something that they like to do and think they do well, does that run through your mind when your making line of scrimmage calls? Seems like knowing your own teams preferences/tendancies is just as important as knowing what the other team like to do, hey?
-Dennis
--Dennis Reda - Ridgecrest, CA
A) I thought we played very well against Carolina and I felt real comfortable throwing the ball. Our offensive line did a great job of protecting me with only one sack in over 40 throws. Unfortunately, the result is not what we wanted. I thought we were the better team for most of the game. Part of my job at the line of scrimmage before the snap is to determine what defensive front we are looking at or at least anticipate what it will be at the snap, because NFL teams are so good at disguising what they are going to do. Of course, that's all a part of every team's game plan as a result of watching video all week before the game. Sometimes we know that our offensive linemen can handle a defensive player one on one and sometimes we know that we will have to double team him. This is all talked through during the week. We also make adjustments during the game if we see something we didn't anticipate. Offensive line play is really under appreciated by most fans but in the end it is crucial to winning. Thanks for writing in.
I really appreciate all the emails I continue to receive but I just don't have time to answer all of them during the season.
