Q) Hang in there Joey!! I love your attitude of loyalty and never-say-quit attitude. It is going to be a pleasure to celebrate with the Lions when we win it all and you can reflect back on these days...knowing what it took to overcome the "frustrating days". But is that what makes winning so sweet anyway? The effort needed to climb the mountain.
What do you do to keep such a positive attitude?
--Keith Corlin - Portage, MI
A) I have always felt that loyalty to the team and your teammates is very important if you are going to win. It gets you through the tough times. I see staying positive as my only option. I don't read the media and away from football I hang out with friends who are supportive.
Q) Hi Joey, My name is Bruce Walker, and have been an avid Lions fan for almost 40 years. I feel that I need to tell you something. The manner in which you conduct yourself, how you respond to the questions & pressure, the effort you put in...I have never liked a quarterback more. It is a good thing that you are able to igrore the media. Just remember that there ARE fans out here that do not need to be spoon-fed information---we can see it with our own eyes. Today is my son, Steven's, 13th birthday. Their 7th grade team was undefeated this year. (Do you remember those days?). Anyway, if I can help him to grow up like you (in integrety, not necessarily profession), I will be most proud!
--Bruce Walker - Grand Marsh, WI
A) Thanks, Bruce, for the kind words. I have learned a lot through the ups and downs of the last few years. Now I just want to win. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to win in Detroit. I remember well playing football in the 7th grade - although we weren't undefeated. Those years of playing in the 5th though 8th grades were great years. Some of my best friends today are the guys who started playing football with me on our Rambler team and then went on to play together in high school My dad was our coach and when a bunch of us get together we still laugh about some of the games and crazy plays. Looking back it was a lot of fun.
Q) Hey Joey-- Not a Question. I live in New York and I am a devoted fan of yours and the Lions. I really enjoy watching you play. You play with so much heart and your a great team player. I just wanted to tell you to keep your head up because I know that you can be a great Quarterback in this league. Good luck the rest of the season and I hope to be saying soon, "Detriot Lions 2005 NFC NORTH CHAMPIONS!"
--Jason Maniscalco, Long Island,NY
--Denny Mcmanson - Amityville, NY
A) Thanks for your support. That makes two of us who would like to be saying "NFC Champs" at the end of the season.
Q) The Ducks crushed Arizona State on Saturday and it has seemed to put there whole season in focus. I feel a similar Lions win over Carolina would put you in clear command of your division. Everybody in Eugene was thrilled to see Troy Aikman give a thoughtful commentary of your situation in Detroit on ESPN's Pardon The Interruption (I know you don't watch but it was nice) and we're all pulling for you to push the Panthers D around. It will be a nice cap to a weekend in which the Webfoots will have surely dominated the Huskies.
Continued success,
Corey Roberts
--Corey Roberts - Eugene, OR
A) It was a great win for the Ducks and I hope they keep it going this Saturday against Washington. Nothing beats the UO/UW atmoshere. We would love to cap the weekend off with a win over Carolina. It would give us some good momentum. I don't get a chance to watch much TV so I didn't see Troy's piece.
Q) Joey,
Not a question, but I just wanted to say thank you so much for the autographed 8x10 that came today for the October drawing! What a nice surprise to come home to after work! Good luck on Sunday! Go Lions!
Melissa Brooks
--Melissa Brooks - Elgin, IL
A) Glad it arrived. Thanks.
Q) First, congratulations on the win today! No, it wasn't perfect and not always pretty but a win is a win. I am impressed by your toughness, Joey. You get knocked down--HARD--more than once--and you get right back up and continue to play. You block a return--you fall and get hit hard and back you come. You seem to go on like this game after game--others don't--they're hurt--they're out. I'm sure some of this is luck and no one want to jinx that by talking too much about it. BUT . . . what do you do when you fall or get hit to help insure that you will not be injured and that you will be able to continue to play? Do you train or condition in any special way that helps you absorb and rebound from the hits? I have to think that your positive outlook on life has to help you with your resiliency here. Your toughness and positiveness are noticed and admired, Joey!
--Kathy Strombeck - Salem, OR
A) Thanks. After the Tampa Bay loss we will take a win however it comes. In the NFL, by the time you start to get to this point in the season, everyone is hurting. You just hope that you don't get hurt. So far I have been very fortunate. I have found that stretching exercises, like Pilates, have really helped me in the last 3-4 years avoid some injuries.
Q) Hey joey,
My name is Kevin Harrington, and I live in Wayne Michigan. My mother and Father have not heard from my grandfather on my dads side in about 25 years, we know that he moved out west, but not exactly sure where. I just thought that maybe by coincidence, we might, although distant, be related in some how. I was hoping if you would be willing to you could e-mail me, and we could see if we are related. Thank you.
--Kevin Harrington - Wayne, MI
A) It doesn't sound like it. My family came from Ireland through Butte, Montana and then on to Oregon more than 25 years ago. Sorry but you still have a great name!
Q) Congrats on the win against Baltimore. I am from Oklahoma but my parents are from Michigan and are very big Lions fans and so is the rest of my family. Everytime you guys play we put Lions gear, t-shirts, hats, anything Lions around the TV to give ya'll good karma. You can hear us cheering down the street when the Lions are on. Just keep plugging away Joey. I have faith that you will do well and turn this season around. I see that you are a scorpio, I am too. My birthday is 4 days after yours, so Happy early Birthday! I really admire you and they way you carry yourself on and off the field. I am proud to wear your jersey. Good Luck against Carolina next week! Go Lions!
Kristle Lacy
--Kristle Lacy - Broken Arrow, OK
A) Keep cheering for the Lions down in Oklahoma. I will be listening for you. Tough loss for the Sooners Saturday. Maybe Sunday helped a bit.
Q) Hi Joey! First thing, just wanted to say that I really enjoy watching you play and I think you're a very classy player. I've been watching you play from when you first started with the ducks. In fact I am a huge Duck fan. I was born and raised in Eugene and now I live in Spokane, Washington, "Cougar Country," so I get trash talked a lot for being a Duck fan. But I just dish it back at those Cougars. I was just wondering if you go back to Eugene and visit. Do you catch any of the Ducks' games? Good luck for the season. I'll be watching.
--Kayla McComas - Otis Orchards, WA
A) I haven't been back to a Duck football game since my first year with the Lions. I only have one bye week during the season and the past three years I have gone to watch my brother play for the University of Idaho. My youngest brother is a manager for the Duck football team so I will try to see a game next year if it works out. When I am in Portland during the winter I try to go down and catch a basketball game at Mac Court. That's still fun.
Q) Hey Joey--Baltimore, who the Lions play this week, is notorious for their ability to both pressure the quarterback and defend against the pass. Do you prepare differently than you would against a more conservative team?
I'll be there Sunday to cheer for you guys. Go Lions!
~Paul Talpos-Troy, Michigan
--Paul Talpos - Troy, MI
A) No, not really. It doesn't make any difference who we play because we spends hours watching film on our opponent during the week. By the time Sunday comes everyone has a pretty good idea of what the other team does. We will always add some new wrinkles for each team though,
