Q) Joey, I want to congradulate you on your impressive game throwing 3 TDs. I know when your in a slump it's hard to get out of it and get back in your normal rhythm especially when you don't get a chance. But you really stepped it up showing what your capable of and of what we all think you should be doing. It shows true character and I wish everyone in this great country shows the character like you showed today. Good luck with the rest of the seasons. GO DUCKS QUACK QUACK QUACK!
--Don Burke - Wilmington, DE
A) It was nice to be on the field with the whole team playing well. I really enjoyed it. As for the Ducks, 9-1 is pretty special going into the Civil War with the Beavers. It looks like they could end up in a great bowl game this year.
Q) Joey~
As you prepare for each specific game do you set mile-markers or mini goals for your performance as you work toward the overall team victory? (Examples such as completion percentages, no sacks, total yardage, specific number of touchdowns, etc.) I ask the question because I was only involved in individual sports where the results were only based on my performance and did not rely on teammates or opponents to aid or impede the final outcome. If my goal was to run under a certain time or jump a specific distance, it was completely within my power, but you have receivers that need to catch your passes and an offensive line that needs to protect you. If they let you down, it affects your ability to follow through on your agenda. (The question is not intended to make you seem selfish in gaining personal accomplishments, but how you formulate and implement a plan with so many variables that are not within your control.)
Good Luck with your plan this weekend!

A) Certainly the overall goal is to win, especially in a team sport. Like every team, we have a game plan each week that is set after watching video of the opponent by our coaching staff. It really doesn't mean too much to have impressive individual game stats if your team loses. You hear that a lot from athletes in team sports. Sharing a win with a goup of players who have contributed to the win is the real thrill in football for me.
Q) Hi Joey, Been a huge fan since your Oregon days. I just wanted to say how lucky we are to have a class act guy like you in Detroit, on and off the field. I'm hoping you'll be around a long time!!! I mean with the foundation and every other thing you've done as far as working with children and charities. You couldn't ask for a better person. And on the field, I've watched the Lions for a long time and I've studied their history extensively, and there hasn't been a player thats come along quite like you. You're and excellent player and things will work out. Keep your head up Joey. Remember... Good things happen to good people!
--Richard Stirling - Richmond, MI
A) We've got a lot of great guys on this Lions team and I'm hoping good things happen for us all. I've learned a lot about peaks and valleys these past few years and so you just keep working hard. It's easy to get down when you lose but I know what it is like to win and that's where I want to be in this league - winning. Thanks for the encouragement from you and so many other Lions fans.
Q) Joey,
Every year I take my kids to the basketball game where they Lions play against the Oakland FOP. Are you going to play in this years game? It is always a lot of good, clean, family fun. I know my kids and I would LOVE to meet you. You are a perfect role model for them when it comes to showing class while people are bad mouthing you, and you show the quiet courage that many people lack. I think you are doing the Lions good, and will continue to do so!
Go Lions!!

A) I haven't played in the recent past because I have left Detroit for a few months and gone home. Maybe some time in the near future it will work out that I can play. I think it would be a lot of fun.
Q) Hi Joey,
Thanks so much for all the time and energy you dedicate to working with children. In the future it will be good to be remembered as a great quarterback, but so much better to be remembered for your contribution to the greater good. Because of that, you will always be a hero. We know you'll keep going strong, and win or lose we look forward to being "Joey-fans" for years to come.
--Christine Vega - Orange, CA
A) Playing football and also being in a position to contribute to others in need gives me a lot of satisfaction. I know the football won't last forever but, hopefully, our family foundation will be around for a long time to come and I can become more involved in the future. Thanks for the thought.
Q) Joey, just wanted to tell you to keep faith. On and off the field you are an incredible person. No one could pay me any amount of money to stop rooting on my Lions! Or you for that matter, because you bring something to the game that no one else can - class and determination, even when the odds are against you. And you know what? This race for the NFC North isn't over! We are only 1 game out of 1st now, and I am confident in the Lions that you guys will keep going strong. Almost every game this season has been a close ball game. That counts for something. The Lions don't quit, and neither do you. So I won't either. GO LIONS!
--Monica Gonzalez - Palm Beach Gardens, FL
A) Stay with us. You sound like a real Lion fan. We haven't quit either and we are just halfway through the season. There's a lot of football left.
Q) Hey Joey. I was just looking through the "Photos" section on this site and noticed that you partook in the "Take A Player to School" activity. Your generous and admirable personality has no doubt touched everyone around you. How did this program come about and how did it feel to spend some time with kids for a day? Thanks.
--Michael Wester - Mount Prospect, IL
A) I have done this for a few years since I have been in Detroit. The NFL sponsors a "Take a Player to School" day every year and I volunteered. It's been a lot of fun. The kids in the schools have been great. Dylan was a great young guy on Tuesday and I really enjoyed visiting his school. Wish I had more time to do these kinds of things during the season.
Q) Hang in there Joey, there are a lot of things that can happen during the course of a season, as you know. I have followed the Lions for about 25 years, and you are the most talented quarterback we've had here in that time, bar none. You are a class act on and off the field, and no matter what happens, you'll come out a winner undoubtedly. Hopefully you'll stay here in Detroit, it would only be right to have you help see this thing through. When you first came here, the Lions were expansion-like in talent. But now you guys are on the brink of being consistent winners. Talent plus execution equals victory. Enjoy the journey. Thank you for all of your efforts thus far...

A) Thanks for such a nice note. I contiue to receive many like yours. Just wish I could answer them all. I think you are right. We are on the brink of winning consistently.
Q) Joey- I would like to wish you a belated happy birthday, I too was born on the 21st of October but am quite a bit older than you.
I've been a Lions fan for ever so I'm very familar with the history of their QB"s. You are handling the situation with dignity and class, My son has a poster that depicts you and a real Lion and says "lion heart". I feel that is a great description of you. You have a great deal of heart and you will suceed here in Detroit. I'm a football coach at a small rural high school in northern Michigan. You have many fans among the kids up here and you are a great example for them. I would be proud to have my son and players grow up to be like you. Brock Robinson Bellaire Mi.
--Brock Robinson - Bellaire, MI
A) Thank you for your note. I am happy to be an example for your kids but I bet you are probably the best role model they have in athletics every day. High school football was a great memory and I still admire and keep in contact with my high school coach.
Q) That was a great Albom article. Our girls varsity basketball coach used you as an example today of a team player who doesn't complain or badmouth teammates, even when things get tough. Thanks for that.
Have you read Plimpton's "Paper Lion"? 's a good read.
Head up. Lots of us are behind you.
Connie Farmer, Kalamazoo
--connie farmer - kalamazoo, MI
A) I respect Mitch Albom and have enjoyed being on his radio show on Mondays while I have been in Detroit. He can be critical but he's fair. I really enjoyed his book "Tuesdays With Morrie". Haven't read George Plimpton's book. Good luck this season and thanks for your support.
