Q) Hi again, I had the pleasure of meeting you and Chris Redman while walking with your cousin, Padraig Harrington at the TOUR Championship..........gentlemen all. During our ride to the 16th tee, I mentioned that my quartet (the Good Time Singers) was scheduled to perform our National Anthem at the Houston Texans game, which would be our eight time for the Falcons since, 1975. Yes, before you were born. Well, we promised to do our best and you came thru with flying colors for the Falcons 1st win of the year. That also marked our eight win for the Falcons when we perform the Anthem. That's right, 8 wins vs. 0 losses. My question, since you were so excited to hear of our record, why not have us back again real soon. We like winners!
As a season ticket holder since 1966, I thought you and the team did a super job in securing the win against the 49ers........and I can assure you of many more.
--Bill Schreiner - Marietta, GA
A) Thanks, Bill, for your words. That was a nice day on the course following Padraig. I usually get to see him play about once a year although we keep in contact throughout the year. With your record I am surprised the Falcons don't make you the offical singers for the National Anthemn all the time! I will look for you next time you are on the field.
Q) I've been an Atlanta sports fan for over twenty years--my whole life. Seldom have I been struck by an athlete's composure and professionalism like I have been while watching you this year with the Falcons. You have a uniquely classy brand of competitiveness and your "team first" attitude is an excellent example to all who aspire to be leaders. My question is this: what has helped you become the leader that you are today and what do you view as essential leadership qualities? Keep up the good work and don't let the occasional football struggle change your perspective.
--Kevin Roach - Miami, FL
A) I guess I have just always gravitated to positions of leadership. In athletics I was fortunate to be blessed with some athletic ability and with that came confidence to play whatever sport was in season. I am also very competitve by nature but was fortunate to be coached by people who understood the right perspective about competing. My father, a former high school coach, coached me when I was in the youth football and basketball and he always emphacized the importance of having fun first. Of course, he recognized my abilities and helped me understand the importance of being a good team member. Later in high school I had coaches who I respected and they put me in positions where I could best use my talents and still support others as a good teammate. In college coaches like Mike Bellotti and Jeff Tedford believed in me and that only increased my confidence as a leader on the field and off. I have found that to be a good leader you need confidence in yourself but just as importantly, you need to show confidence in others. That's why it's a team game.
Q) Hello Joey,
First of all, thank you for giving back to the community and more importantly, being a class act. I am a Oregon transplant to California and have followed Oregon football for many years. Your time at Oregon was - well fantastic and I often pop in my VHS to watch that ASU OT game (big smile). I have closely followed your professional football career and admire your strength and professionalism. I hope that you will find a team where you can thrive. I will always be proud to wear Number 3! My questions are: What are your plans after your playing years (a long time from now of course!)? Do you plan to stay associated with football, perhaps with UO? Go Ducks! And I am rooting for you in your next NFL game. Sincerely, Karolina
--Karolina Bedacht - Walnut Creek, CA
A) Thanks for a very nice note. I really appreciate it. That was a great win at ASU my junior year and seemed to be like a lot of our wins at Oregon during my career - coming from behind. I am not sure about my specific plans after football but I am sure that our plans will no doubt bring us back to Oregon. This past weekend I had a chance to fly back and attend the Duck win against USC. That's the first game I have been able to see in Autzen for five years and I know I hope to see a lot more in years to come. I will always be an active supporter of Duck athletics.
Q) Let me first say that you are a class act. The way you have handled the coaches decision to not have you be the starter is the type of role model attitude that is positive to our young athletes. That was a tough situation I am sure, and from the outsie looking in, we all know that you didn't necessarily get the support that you needed to be able to excel. Good luck going forward. I am sure that you will rise above the adversity.
--Trey White - Ooltewah, TN
A) Thanks for the email. I have been here before in my career and I know the QB gets too much praise when the team wins and too much criticism when it losses. I plan to stay ready and support my teammates.
Q) Joey,
Just wanted to express my sorrow that you've been replaced as the starter by Byron. I think that you are a great quarterback, but more importantly, a great person. We need more athletes like you in professional sports. I know you will continue to be an asset to the Falcons Organization and to the NFL as a whole. I continue to wish you the best in all of your endeavors.
Sincerely,
Tom
P.S. Sorry that wasn't exactly a question! Um, who's your favorite band/artist?
--Tom Quist - Athens, GA
A) That's nice of you to say. I guess I have tried to carry myself with the same approach, trying to stay positive, throughout my years in the NFL. Right now is a very disappointing time personally, but I have learned that the NFL is a very fickle business. My only positive option is to stay ready and be as supportive as I can for this team. I have a lot of favorite artists but combining an artist and band it would probably be Dave Matthews.
Q) Hey Joey,
Fellow Oregon Duck here...
I would just like to express how happy I am to have you as the quarterback of my Atlanta Falcons. I really admire the positive attitude and leadership that you have demonstrated since you joined the team. Despite all the pressure that has been placed on you by the media, fans and coaches, your outlook on the game, and more importantly, life, remains unchanged. A true leader leads by example and you continue to show us all how to be resilient, humble, yet determined to achieve our goals in career and the community we live in. I wish you much success this season and the rest of your career.
Sincerely,
Adrian
--Adrian Kosinda - Atlanta, GA
A) I really appreciate your comments, Adrian. Go Falcons and go Ducks!
Q) Hey Joey,
Tough game Sunday, the Titans have been giving a lot of teams trouble though. I was upset to see them bench you, but I'm glad to see you're starting on Monday Night Football. I just want to say best of luck to you. I know you'll do great.
--Sam Lewis - Tacoma, WA
A) It was a tough loss and I wish we would have finished strong but it didn't happen. I will be ready to go again next Monday and I am looking forward to getting back to the Dome where I have played well this season. Thanks, Sam.
Q) Dear Joey,
Today is my 63rd birthday. I am a mother of two and a grandmother of two terrific boys. I have followed your career since you were at Univ. of Oregon (Go Ducks!!!). For my birthday, I received a sweatshirt with the Ducks on the front. I also received your #13 shirt from the Falcons. I am thrilled to have these two things to honor you!!! I am a big fan, and wish you well with your career with the Falcons!
Carol
--Carol Fischer - Lutherville, MD

A) Glad to hear from another Joey. Changing numbers isn't all that bad. Keep working hard and make sure to have fun while you are playing.
Q) Dear Joey,
I wanted to say that was a strong showing against the Texans. The Carolina game was great to see you run like that. I just wanted to say thanks for trying hard, and making the best of a difficult situation. Hopefully you can make it home here in Atlanta and bring a Lombardi trophy in the future. I also wanted to say thank you for taking time after the Texans game to take a picture with my friend and me. You were very nice and we really appreciate the time you gave us. Hopefully you and the Falcons can go up to Tennessee and make it 2-3. Good luck the rest of the season.
Your Fan,
Al Popham
--Al Popham - Douglasville, GA
A) Thanks Al. As I have said a nuymber of times, we really love it in Atlanta and hopefully will be here for some years. I think that we are on the right track and our future looks good as an organizationh. Looking forward to a great game this Sunday.
