Q) Hey J!
Just caught the podcast of last weeks "Wait! Wait! Don't tell me!" Great that you support public radio. Wish more pro athletes would step up and do good. I guess that just fits with who you are though: you've always supported schools, food drives, and whatnot everywhere you've played. Hope you have a great year next season!

A) Glad you had a chance to catch the show on a podcast. I have always enjoyed shows like "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" and "Car Talk" on NPR. I was really excited to be asked to be on the show. They probably had me on tape for about 40 minutes but it all had to be cut down for an hour show. Regardless, it was a lot of fun.
Q) Hey, Joey. As a huge fan of the Oregon State Beavers, it might surprise you to see a note from me here. But I just want to say that you have represented Oregon (all of it!) and the Ducks with grace and dignity with all that's happened in your pro career. You are a terrific quarterback and one terrific human being. I believe that there is a perfect place for you in the NFL and that your experiences so far have been nothing but strengtheneing exercises for the mind and spirit. If that place is in Atlanta, that would be fine. If not, you can be sure that all your Oregon friends will follow your career with all good wishes. Oh, by the way, I'm listening to the Wait! Wait! episode you appeared on and am enjoying it very much. All the Lombardi Trophy gets you is another gizmo to dust!
Thanks for your work in the foundation, as well. That's what will ultimately be the legacy you leave the world.

A) That's very nice of you to say - especially coming from a Beaver. I have a tremendous love for Oregon and will be back when my NFL days are over. Right now we really enjoy living in Atlanta and would be very happy to stay. This is my seventh coach in seven years so I have seen quite a bit. I have learned that it's important to stay positive but that nothing is for certain in the NFL. Thanks for writing.
Q) Hey Joey, I'm a die hard Falcon fan, and I think that you were a huge bright spot for this team when we needed one the most. That 360 yard game against Carolina was the best QB performance Atlanta has had in a very long time. You need to stay focused, and remember that to us fans, and to alot of Atlanta, you are our starting quarterback, and with a new family in Mike Smith, and Coach Mularkey (whom you are very familiar with), you can be a very good QB. My question is, do you plan on going for the starting QB over Chris ?, I know you have the potential with a good O-line.
--Roger Sherrer - Lebanon, MO
A) I appreciate your note. The game against Carolina was a disappointment because in the end we made too many mistakes and lost. Yes, I know and like our new offensive coordinator, Mike Mularkey. I played for him in Miami. I am really happy that our quarterback coach, Bill Musgrave, is staying. He's a great coach. We just need to develop a better team atmosphere after last year's communication disaster with the head coach. I think we can do it and I am sure Mike Smith has been working on how to make it happen. Chris and I get along very well and are supportive of each other.
Q) Dear Joey we were just wondering if there is going to be any new football gear for sale on your web site? We have bought it all ever since you were with the loins,we have it all and am looking for more. thank you Joe and Anita Jordan Junction City Or.
--Joseph Jordan - Junction City, OR
A) I am sure there will be new items at some point but we don't order new stock until the spring in anticipation of the new season.
Q) Hi Joey,
My name is Quinten. I am 7 years old. I live in Michigan now but I was born in Oregon. You are my favorite player in the world. When I play football with my friends, I am you. I hope you get to play more next year. Do you want to play for the falcons next year or someone else? If you play someplace else, I will still be your fan.
your biggest fan,
Quinten William DeMyer
--Quinten DeMyer - Allendale, MI
A) Thanks Quinten for your letter. I was born in Oregon too. I would like to play for the Falcons next year. My wife and I have bought a home and we really like our neighbors. Unfortunately, the NFL is a business and sometimes you don't get to choose where you play. Have fun when you play football with your friends and I will be looking for your name some day.
Q) Hey Joey, hows it going? What have you been up to lately?I was just wondering what you learned this season and what you would like to work on this offseason? And also, what is your mos favorite moment in your NFL career?
--Ryan Feroni Jr. - Carleton, MI
A) This season is a bit different than most because I am spending the off season in Atlanta. Usually, I come home to Portland. My wife now has a job at a hospital in the area so it makes it a bit more difficult to be away long. However, I have spent part of the month doing projects around the house and yard that were put off all season like cleaning the garage and building a new work bench. Of course, I am happy to play golf anytime and have found time to get out again. I usually will take January off and then start working out again in February in anticipation of the spring training camps. Since we are now in Atlanta I can get back out to Flowery Branch easily. I don't know that I have a favorite moment in the NFL but certainly the win over Detroit on Thanksgiving on national TV last year was the most satisfying.
Q) Hi Joey,
I am a fellow Central alumnus, and had classes with both your brothers. As part of a Christmas present for my sister, I made a donation to Los Embajadores, an organization that sends groups of high school students to Mexico. During their time there, they participate in a building project, as well as work to create cross-cultural relationships and understanding. I received a note back from Los Embajadores, saying that my donation had been matched dollar-for-dollar by the Harrington Family Foundation. I just wanted to write to say thanks-- I am so happy to hear that you are supporting such a great program. I went on one of the trips myself in high school, and know that many, many other Rams have done so, too.
Take care.
Stephanie, Portland, Oregon
--Stephanie Young - Portland, OR
A) We are happy to be involved in supporting the Los Embajadores program. I have heard good things about the experience from friends who have gone. I think that the community service requirement at Central Catholic HS has made a real impression on it's students and has helped them to recognize the importance of assisting those in need. Thanks for writing, Stephanie and Go Rams.
Q) With the Falcons season over was just curious to see if you made it to El Paso to catch the Sun Bowl in person or if you were relegated to watching the SEC/CBS coverage of the game as many of us were. It was nice to see the team rally around Roper and send Dixon and the Seniors off with a win.
--Brett Laidlaw - Vernon, CT
A) I didn't make it to El Paso since we were finishing up the season on Sunday and Monday we had a team meeting. I was able to watch on TV. Great win for the Ducks.
Q) Hi Joey: I don't have a question as much as a comment. I've never met you; however, my husband has and speaks very highly of you and your wife. He worked at Sundance Marina last summer and that's where he met you (he's a big guy; well-kept beard, worked on the dock).
We just want to offer our support during all of the turmoil in Atlanta. You are a class act and deserve so much better than what you've been receiving. Hang in there; keep your head high! You have a huge fan base of supporters!
--Karen Wright - Portland, OR
A) Thanks for your support. After six years in the NFL, with a lot of turmoil on the teams with which I have played, it is about time things take a turn for the better. I plan on staying positive.
Q) Joey, having grown up in SE Portland and particpated playing and coaching youth sports it was inevitable to encounter Harrington kids along the way. You have an amazing family. You also have many, many supporters who follow your career and are both sad to see you have to endure another tough situation, but extremely impressed by your class and maturity in handling yourself and leading those around you.
I have a son who is currently working on his high school football QB career, and I am very happy to say he is a huge fan of yours. I can tell you, without reservation, he could not have a better role model. He is fiercly loyal to his team and works extremely hard to be the best he can.
In the off-season this year, between your engagements and work for the foundation, will you be participating in any Quarterback camps?
--Jon Epley - Portland, OR
A) Thanks for the nice note. This has been an unexpected season for all the obvious reasons which have played out in the media. Playing for six NFL head coaches in six season, two who left mid-season, is really something. I might be in the process of setting a NFL record with probably a new coach again next year. All I can do is try to act in a professional manner despite what happens. Even as a young athlete you hear about athletics teaching you character development. I know all about that over the past few years! But I need to remember that I had a great run through high school and college with almost everything going my way. The NFL is a completely different scene. It can be a cutthroat, cynical business - especially if you are not winning. Tell your son that he should enjoy himself first at this stage of sports. The high school years are great. Don't get caught up in trying to look too far ahead or you will miss the enjoyment of high school sports. I am not sure about QB camps this off season since I will be living in Atlanta when the season ends. I am not sure of my schedule yet but I will be coming back to visit in Portland from time to time.
